Took part in the Art School of Peterborough Art-A-Thon, which raises money for bursaries which help those who cannot pay for classes, get the exposure to art which is integral. Part of what i created during the 12 hour marathon yesterday was a series of three acrylic paintings which portray various glimpses of the Hi-Tops restaurant signage. This iconic signage was a fixture on the downtown scene for more than 60 years. Last month it was removed, making way for some modern, throw-away, bland beige and brown signage. Rest assured, this sign was saved, and will re-appear in some way, shape or form in the coming months / years.
My Ten Favorite albums for the year 2012, based strictly on how often it played in my iTunes, on my turntable or in my head - in no particular order:
Beach House - Bloom, The XX - Coexist, Grizzly Bear - Shields, Cat Power - Sun, Purity Ring - Shrines, Plants and Animals - The End of That, Evening Hymns - Spectral Dust, The Wooden Sky - Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun, The Walkmen - Heaven, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist
Song of the year has to be Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with the frivolous track Thrift Shop - so much fun! Others include Taken By Trees - Dreams, Deadmau5 - The Veldt, Cat Power - Cherokee, Metric - Breathing Underwater, The Shins - Simple Song, Beach House - Myth, Father John Misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings, Django Django - Default, Grimes - Oblivion, Sigur Ros - Ekki Múkk, Atoms for Peace - Default and Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built.
2012 was the year of the missed concert. June was supposed to be my 8th time seeing @radiohead perform. That didn’t happen. The flip side was a fun evening in Dundas Square for Of Montreal and the Flaming Lips. In August, i was at the sweet venue Echo Beach, waiting for Sigur Ros, but alas, received a call from home, just after the set from opener Perfume Genius. Finn had broken his arm playing soccer. Needless to say, i rushed home to be with him. Also, my boys are pretty big fans of @greenday and we had tickets to see them this coming January. That show has also been postponed, and we are awaiting new details, but i don’t expect anything before the spring.
In the clubs, #ptbo was treated to some sweet sets including The Dears at the Hootenanny on Hunter, Born Ruffians at the Red Dog BidiniBand also at the RD, John K Sampson at the Gordon Best and Kathleen Edwards at Showplace. The best of the best was a beautiful evening at The Gordon Best Theatre, which features Evenings Hymns, Nick Ferrio and Jos Fortin.
2013 should prove interesting, as my sights are set on attending a festival – maybe Osheaga, maybe Bonnaroo. Wish me luck.
